Immigration is an interesting topic. I have a pretty different out look on it because of the two years I spent as a missionary in California. I met a lot of people whom I felt came to the United States for a reason. One of them was a lady named Alejandra. She was a nurse in Mexico City who came to this country to support her two little boys. After arriving however, she was unable to continue caring for people because her credentials were not recognized.
Alejandra, along with many others people I met, inspired the following song. I thought I would share it with you all.
Well what if one day you woke
and you found to your surprise
that those fences you'd been building
were now only there back sides
and the only difference noticed
was the expression on your face
yeah the day the US and Mexico decided to trade place
the streets were pale and dusty
and the windows mostly bared
and that language you were speaking
was soon to be outlawed
and that college educated mind of your's
could just be flushed down the drain
because nobody wants and immigrant
to take the commuter train
I said hey... I said hey...
I don't much of a difference between blue and azul eyes
you could say there's not a problem
you could say it'll never change
but there's got to be a better way
well they speak of brick and morder to keep people in their place
and they don't get why you're indignant when it's a slap in your face
when people's nationality is only decided by their fate
then why was there no border line before 1848
I said hey... I said hey...
I don't much of a difference between blue and azul eyes
you could say there's not a problem
you could say it'll never change
but there's got to be a better way
so the next time you have a registered nurse scrubbing the grout 'round your toilet
ask yourself if a boarder line really takes a mind and spoils it.
so if you see me come a running down this beaten path
don't let your friends and enemies be decided by their wrath
let the well wishers to their wishing wells and the nay sayers to say nay
but there's got to be a better way.
