WIC Goes International Good or Bad?
Created and posted for your consideration by Matthew Glenn at 10:22 AMFor the first time in many years, WIC or Women, Infants, & Children is changing what is offered to needy families. Long has been the joke of "Government cheese" when talking about food help programs run by the government. Well, a few weeks ago they added Tofu, Tortillas
, vegetables, and other items to menu for the first time. Some people see this as a bad thing because it will encourage illegals, or immigrants to sign up for the program and become burdens to the system. While every system has it's flaws, WIC makes you jump through a lot of hoops to get approved for it. You and or your child must be on Medicaid to receive it. To be on Medicaid you have to prove you're poor enough to qualify which takes some time to do. To qualify for Medicaid you have to be a citizen or have been a permanent resident long enough to qualify which I think is about 5 years.
While I agree this new menu change might be an attempt to appease a more ethnic group of recipients, it does 1 major thing and allow the recipient to choose from a wider range of options than just the standard milk, cheese, and eggs. There is now a cash voucher for fruits and vegetables that allows the recipient to buy any fresh fruit or vegetable they want for the month up to $6 in value. Which isn't much frankly but at least they're heading in a more health conscious direction. The Tofu also isn't available to everyone, you must get a doctor's approval to have it added to your coupons. The stuff is disgusting why would you want to eat it anyway??
